Annette Funicello had just turned 13 when Walt Disney, the studio's producer, was able to see her dance in a Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. Funicello wasn't asked to take part in the auditions when she was a member of the Mickey Mouse Club cast in its first season which was to the Mickey Mouse Club colleagues' disappointment. Disney proved right as Funicello became The Mickey Mouse Club's most popular performer and appeared in Adventures in Dairyland, her story. Funicello's potential as a teenager star was quickly realized. Disney hired Tutti Camerata, a well-established arranger, to assist her in launching her music career. Annette, however, wasn't too enthusiastic about Funicello singing. Funicello eventually became accustomed to recording and enjoyed the time she spent with Camerata who is one of the very few arrangers in their 40s who understood the fundamentals of the early rock. Annette Sings Anka - her third album - was probably the first record to incorporate the songs of an artist from the rock genre as selection of songs. Funicello made an appearance in Beach Party which was one of five extremely popular beach party flicks, often co-starring Frankie Avalon. Although produced by AIP the scripts were individually examined and signed off by Walt Disney, in order to protect Annette's impeccable image.
