O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. She made it to the top 100 rounds after the judges praised her voice. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. But she lost badly in the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were surprised by her performance, and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known like Melissa. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. The performance she gave on September 7 of 2005 was awe-inspiring that the judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was announced by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
